I already know other people are already questioning this, but could a contestant create original music for this or is this music free?

And for my personal question, if the video is music free, would it still be alright to have singular instrument sounds playing if the scene requires it?

Can I use really loud, obnoxious, disgusting cicada chirps as background music?

If you think you can do something innovative, go for it.

What'chu mean by 'fan-dubby'?

RE: AF Challenge # 5 - "Sound Off" - Jacob AngelStar - 11-02-2013 08:52 PM

Can it be a pilot, one-shot, or a recent episode of a certain Abridged Series?

Hm.

The challenge is about sound mixing, and music is commonly used as a placeholder for or a distraction from the actual sound effects and ambiance of a scene in abridging, and removing it as a factor removes that problem from the equation and forces people to actually focus on their mixing and not mistake it for choosing what songs they want to use.

Sound mixing usually comes before adding the music in post-production, so it's not odd that they would be considered separate things for the challenge.

Hm.

We just did an entire show over why music is important.

Correct me if I'm wrong, code, but I think she's saying just don't use music as general ambiance or "general background noise" or "filler", if you will. I would assume you can use it at major points when appropriate as long as you don't use the OST.

Also, I have to add that this challenge may possibly be the hardest one yet. People are really going to have to bring their A-game for this. Audio is not easy. But a great finished product can be glorious.

EDIT: I AM WRONG. DON'T LISTEN TO ME.

Too late, I listened.

You have led me astray, Airrest.

OKAY! On music: You may use music as sound effect, such as a cellphone ringtone, but not as ambiance. I'm outright banning anime OST in any form.

Abridgers are overreliant on music as ambiance. (OSTs especially) That is why this is a challenge. Most abridged episode mixing devolves into picking the right song for the right mood and throwing some sfx on top. It is easy pump up a few yells with an epic fight score, or use music to parallel a popular movie. It's not as easy to design an audio experience without music as a prefabricated shortcut.

There are many, many other ways to use sound (or lack there of) for storytelling. Big Grin That's why it is a challenge. Audio is the bulk of this challenge. I expect a good deal more time than usual to be spent there. That is why visual component of the video is not weighted as heavily.

Making a video with well placed audio cues and decent recording quality isn't enough to win this challenge.

You may use any animation or cartoon for your entry. All work must be done during the contest timeframe.

Would singing be against the rules? Like if a character was to sing an original song or something?

It seriously cannot be stated any freaking clearer.

So musical ambiance is fine? Perhaps an OST?

Interesting challenge. I'm going to have to think hard about this...

So in other words, we all have to be Ben Burtt. DAMN, I wish I had the time to do these things!

RE: AF Challenge # 5 - "Sound Off" - CrasherSurge - 11-03-2013 11:27 AM

Spoiler(Show)
Rating should not exceed PG-13.

So I was wondering, are we allowed to "censor" all the curse words used in our entry (not including: "bitch", "ass" & "damn")?

Just avoid the seven words you can't say on television: shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits.
