It has come to my attention that in many of my favorite abridged series, that at least one character is retarded.

The trope became popular with DBZA's Nappa. His popularity caused many more that adapt this character archetype. But Nappa isn't the first "retard" in the abridged world.

The trope can find its origin with YGOA's Tristan Taylor, him being the punchline to every joke in season one while on-screen (his character type evolved somewhat in seasons 2 and 3). Even his voice was subject of ridicule (episode 8). The concept of a "Joke" character was fun to portrait, especially a minor character, i.e. Tristan. But, TFS redefined a "Joke" character in Nappa.

Maybe it was the writing or Takahata101's portrayal, but the end result caused a cult-like fanbase towards Nappa, even causing future episodes to have "Ghost Nappa" and fan videos from TFS featuring Nappa.

And like a swarm of moths to a flame, everyone and their mothers wanted to have a "Nappa" in their abridged series and thus Nappa Syndrome is born.

Like everything in this world, they are different degrees to "Nappa Syndrome". DarkSide Inc. have Alexis who, frankly, is full retard. All her lines are just random, funny and random.

'Case and Point':

Also, PurpleEyes's CodeMENT has Suzaku who, like Alexis, is just random, Rivalz who is inconpetence incarnate and Lelouch who is an idiot surrounded by bigger idiots. Granted, abridging is to share a laugh, but it's also an art form to retell an animes story. Just like what Twilight spawned dozens of other painful vampire novels(bear with me for the sake of the comparison), Nappa's character has spread thru many different incarnations.

'Episode 11 of Code Ment':

In conclusion, though Nappa's popularity caused a phenomenon, abusing a good thing can lead to it to be saturated and boring, but when it works, Nappa Syndrome brings laughter to the viewers. Even though I only focused on what I found to be positive case on NS, the bad will surely come, abusing a good thing can lead to disastrous results.

This critique only targets abridging. I know there are others like Nappa that came before, Kramer, MacLovin for exemple, but every medium has it's own set of rules to writing and it's own set of tropes. I only pointed it out in the abridging medium.

Next I would like to ask who is interested/still interested in doing voices for this. If you are interested, please tell us which role you would like to try. We are not holding traditional auditions (which is why this is not in the audition thread) for a couple of reasons. (1) Aside from Tenma, all the currently open parts have about 2 lines. (2) We do not really have a set character profile for the characters at this time (except for Tenma), therefore we are only looking at whether your voice might fit a character. Put simply, we are not looking for anything other than the character sounding the correct gender. As for Tenma, we will talk about what we are looking for during a Skype call, which I will discuss next.

If you tell us what role you would like to try; either me, Mattroks101, or Truthordeal will pull you aside on Skype to talk to you about it. If you don't have any of us on Skype, you can find me or Matt in the Skype Username List . In the Skype call, we will give you the line(s) for the character and talk you through delivery and such (which is why lines are not posted here)

There is no official deadline. If you want a part but wait to ask about it and later someone takes that part, it will be your own fault

A final note: You can be cast as more than one character, but we will probably try to limit this. This project originally started with the idea of bringing many abridgers together and although that concept has been reworked a bit, we can still allow that idea to function in terms of voice acting.

Shakugan No Shana Review

Hurrah It a magical tsundre I see across my computer screen, if it weren’t for animeratio I guess I would be bored with average anime that consist of power hungry monkeys from outer space. Not that I have a problem with dragon ball I just want to see things happen on earth, but now that I think about it, why is Canada never in peril. On that note I guess I will be reviewing the first season of Shakugan No Shanna.

Im guessing that girl power is in need to be said for this anime, but the main character is guy so what the fuck. Yuiji Sakai is oh for fuck sake another High school student that gets thrown into the Fucking world of discord and what not, so why oh why do we need to do this interview, well because I like this series and you can’t stop me. Yuiji is just that cliché unsuspecting high school student that can’t get a life until shit suddenly gets real and there is a two stories high baby eating the existence of people (that’s new) with some royal bitch telling it to do whatever it wants (not new). Then suddenly some girl with flaming hair and blazing eyes comes to kill it. After so Yuiji freaks out he asks her what going on and well shit he is dead…huh. Then comes to find out that he can live forever because of a treasure called “The Midnight Lost Child” which I find kinda pedopiliac.
The Girl is some ass kicking person that keeps the balance and what not, and she has her partner Alastor that’s a jewel of some sort and has the voice of a God. The characters that were like Shana were called Flame Hazes which kill things to keep balance of things. Though why did the all need fancy names for themselves like Margery Daw The Chanter of Elegies some shit like that. If I want to present myself I would be like “Hi my name is Yaro and I am an Abridger good night.” I don’t suppose that this is the only collective input on the main characters, unfortunately it is.
The sub characters played a decent part in the series and maybe even deserve a place in that thing I call a heart. But I still struggle with the name thing so I guess the heart will have to do.

I guess the bad guys were like actual bad guys so that’s a improvement, but they all struck me as lazy because they had lackeys doing the work for them or having to put off the job to someone else. So I just do as I regularly do and turn my head an let nature do the work.

So my final verdict hmm well I can’t say I dislike it, the show had some originality within its context and that voices were really good. My only complaint is the high school student thing but all in all I guess it’s a rare edition to me and gets 5 out of 5. Now all I need to do is wait for the twats that bought the series to dub the final season, I believe their name is Funimation.

Making my scripts better

As I'm working on Guyver the BioBoosted Abridged solo, I don't really have anyone to tell me when a joke fails completely. I have a buddy who does a couple of parts and another who has opted to be an extra, but neither of them chime in on the script. One doesn't care and the other isn't available often.

So, is there someone who would be willing to look over my script and point out anything that can be vastly improved upon? I keep scripts on Google Docs, so a Google account is a plus.

RAVE'D Audtions

I've recently just started up RAVE'D. Basically a Rave Master abridged series. I am looking for voices.

Please note that these roles are just basic main characters, please feel free to send videos of future characters. But i'd recomend doing that when those episodes get closer.

Role: Main Characters:

Elie - Would much prefer to be played by a female. None of that stupid man's high pitch crap.

Elie's Lines:
1. (Realising) Haru? Have you been teaching this dog to steal for you!? You bloody THIEFS!
2. (Trying to get something out of Haru) I dunno, my memories not what it used to be.
3. (Angry) EAT CARROT NOSED DOG!

Plue - Required to be gruff and deep to the smoke he inhaled in episode

Plue's Lines:
1. (Relaxed) I'm exactly where i want to be... Aww... Yeah...
2. (Whining like a child) But i want to see the lady
3. (Agonising pain) AAAHH! THE PAIN! ELIE! WHY!?

Hamrio Musica (aka The Silver Claimer) - Needs to be mid-deep voiced, very laid back. Similar to TheAzureCrows Yusei.

Hamrio's Lines (He will be addressed as Musica, not Hamrio, but this is just so everyone knows which one):
1. (Explaining calmly) My name is Musica, Leader of The Silver Rhythm Gang.
2. (Interested) Is it true that you are the Rave Master?
3. (Surprised/Scared) WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!?

Shiba - Old and raspy, my old man voice is terrible.

Shiba's Lines:
1. (Narrating) 50 years ago the powers of the light faced the malicious forces of the dark.
2. (Dying breath) Haru... you are the Rave Master now... take the stone.
3. (Happy) Hooray! I'm healthy again!

Galien Musica (aka The Blacksmith) - Needs to be an old man voice, but deeper than shiba.

Galien's Lines:
1. (Drunk) Hic... I hope your ready for a pound lad... Cos i got no time to *mumbles* *Snores*
2. (Serious) Haru, it will take me time to fix your sword, at least a whole day.
3. (Surprised/Angry) What are you doing to that dog!?

General Shudda - First main villian, sinister. Maybe a slight LK Kaiba voice.

Shudda's Lines:
1. (happy) Why hello there, Rave Master.
2. (surprised) Is that the famous 10 commandments sword!?
3. (serious) This dark bring is called Valzier Flame, and look, i got it put in this sexy bracelet. Does it get you... Hot?

Role: Minor Characters

Hole - The miner in episode 2.

Hole's Lines:
1. (Introducing) My name's Hole, better known as the get away guru.
2. (Answering happily) Neither, i'm a tranny, woman's body, man's junk.
3. (Inviting happily) Well, this is my place, come on in!

Henchmen:
There's a lot of them, from body guards to gang members. This will be an easy role. Just basically say anything from "I won't let you pass" to "I'm going to kill you!" Get creative, that will earn you points.

Finally, in terms of how to submit your voice.
(I am brand new to this site so correct me if this is wrong.)

1. Make your audio file into one of the following.
- A mp3 file with a photo or photo's of the characters you want to play
- A short video with a photo of the character with it

2. Email it to me (I'd prefer it to be email through this site, but if that doesnt work that way contact me through my profile and i'll sort something out.)

Note: I would also prefer it if you would provide a short text file explained why you would like the role, what do you want out of it and if you have been included in any other projects i can view via youtube, and provide links.
This will help me decide.

Also, just as a final note, those who help with this project may also go on to get work on TheAtlasSquad's ABTAPS - Astro Boy The Abridged Parody Series and other internet projects the team works on. Don't pay too much attention to the first episodes crappyness, it was fun but it was poorly written.

I am going to make the deadline the 1st of June.
